Recent events...
Here are some recent events at our place...
Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer Chocolate Crackles have been a hit too. Mike made these for work, but we got to eat some...and there are ingredients left over. SCORE!!!!!
Lego is still a winner, though the interest is waning. We have only pulled out a few handfuls from Mike's massive stash, but that hasn't stopped the odd Lego man appearing under furniture and usually under my foot!
We painted some cardboard yesterday to create some cool dinoasurs for Alex's Dinosaur Party in a few weeks. Alex's interest was held for about 15 minutes, Megan's was much longer. Surprise, surprise!
These are our completed Dinosaurs, except Mr T-Rex is now extinct because the dogs chewed him up. Not happy Jan!!!!
Toilet training with Alex has been going really well. Amazingly so. And apparently it's ok to let little boys have a wee in the garden. I'm not quite sure, but it has made much less washing for me coz he doesn't have to race inside, so I'll put up with it.....for now.

It begins again...
I thought of a few titles for this post that weren't exactly savoury. "#1s for Number 2" was the one that made me chuckle a little too much!
The fact of the matter is that we took the plunge and took Alex's nappy off...not just for nudey time, but hopefully for good.
He has been interested in the toilet on and off for a few months. He has been to the toilet successfully a few times as well, but never more than once. He has even been grabbing himself through the nappy, and when asked "Do you need to go to the toilet?" his reply was always "No!" coz it was too late.
But since there was a stretch of days ahead of us where Alex would be mainly at home or at the Grandparents, we thought "Let's go for it!". The nappy came off and the undies went on. He seemed to know what he had to do and when and he loved running around with his little jocks on and no shorts. (That was his bonus for wearing undies - and my laziness... if he had any accidents, I only had to wash undies and not pants as well!)
Overall, I would class day one as a success especially by the fact that he didn't want the nappy back on at bedtime. But we can only deal with one thing at a time, and night toilet training can wait a little while.
But as we learned the hard way with Child #1*, toilet training is not as easy as all the toilet-train-your-child-in-two-days gurus make out.
So we will wait and see.....with fingers crossed...and toes...and eyes....!

Will I jinx myself....?
I hummed and harred over writing this post or not. I really don't want to jinx myself and stuff everything up!
Toiletting post about to begin...look away those not interested!!!
We FINALLY started making Megan wear undies to bed rather than a nappy. I can hear your cries of shock and horror that a 4 yr old was still wearing night nappies. It was part laziness by us and part respect for the "she'll do it when she's ready" adage.
For those not up with the 'Megan toilet saga', she trained herself with wee really easily after she was 2. But we had a whole world of trouble with her going to the toilet to do poo. She has only just got the hang of it after 2 years of cleaning up accidents.
Surely now you can understand our hesitation in taking the leap into night training?? Changing sheets and pyjamas at 3in the morning isnt appealing. And since she had had difficulties in the past we didn't want to rush her before she was ready.
However I'm happy to say that Megan seems to have worked out the mechanics of emptying out before going to bed and holding on during the night. She had an accident the first night but has been dry all this week...even at a sleepover with her aunty in a different bed/environment.
We do make her go to the toilet before she goes to bed and we wake her up to go again when we go to bed. This probably isn't teaching her to wake up herself, but since it causes no big inconvenience to us we will stick to this plan for now.
Any other ideas on getting her to wake herself up would be greatly appreciated!!

Progress Report...
It's been a while so here's what's new.....
MEGAN
MEGAN
- was doing really well with #2's in the toilet, until.....
- last weekend she got gastro/food poisoning/not sure. Threw up in her bed just as we had gone to bed. Cleaned her up, stripped the bed and couldn't be bothered re-making her bed so brought her into bed with us. Surely there was nothing left for her to vomit up...right??? WRONG!! So now a queen bed to be stripped, new sheets and doonas found, towels covering the bed. Slept for an hour, off she goes again. Another clean up, more blankets, more towels. Repeat 2 more times...almost running out of towels and blankets (she always managed to get just a little bit of spew on the blankets...enough to need them changed. Grrr!). She felt better in the morning and we got a few hours of sleep. She hasn't eaten much since then but is slowly recovering, I think.
- we bought a tent for cheaper, more frequent family holidays and Megan is very excited about camping. It has been pitched in the backyard to check it all out and she has loved helping set it up and play in it. Pity the weather is so miserable that we can't try it out overnight.
- is fast approaching her 4th birthday and preparations are underway. She wanted a 'Busby' (from The Hive) birthday cake so we are going with a bit of a bee theme...well a HUGE bee theme actually!!
- actually did art-work at creche the other day! I was so excited 'coz he refuses to do crafty things there. The girls at the centre said I should soak it up while I can so I did!
- got a cute new beanie
- is speaking so well that I have to remind myself that he is only 2!
- loves copying Megan still, so he rattles off "A.L.E.X spells Alex!" Don't think he has any idea what he is actually saying though :)
- really enjoys swimming now. He wants to do what the older girls do, but he still has a death grip on the teacher. He is actually getting to the point of too confident and starting to do silly things while waiting for his turn. Have to keep a keen eye on him!
- has been interested in the toilet/potty for ages but never actually did anything until tonight! Wee in the toilet after he said "I want to go to the toilet". After such disaster with Megan, I'm not holding my breath!!

Almost...maybe...could be...!
Don't want to jinx myself, but I think we might be getting there...almost, maybe, could be...!
Megan has been doing #1s in the toilet with few accidents for almost a year now. Sadly, #2s were not so easily learned.
We tried everything, every strategy we could find, every suggestion we heard about. We made reward charts, promised lollies, made her clean her undies, laughed at accidents, ignored accidents, made her sit for ages, let her have nuddy time, wrote a 'Poo Story', got the potty out, hid the potty...you name it, we tried it.
We growled in frustration a lot (not proud of that one), but after a year of cleaning pooey undies, it was hard not to! She got frustrated too, she cried sometimes and often hid or said she hadn't had an accident when she had. She would even hold it in.
It's not like we forced it on her- she wanted to be a big girl and do poo in the toilet...she just didnt get it. We were so worried, especially after the health nurse said that she could lose the sensation of needing to go if she kept it up. Pleasant topic I know!!!
But I think the penny may have dropped. She is happy to toddle off now and so proud when she can tell us (and yes, even show us) when she has gone. She isn't 100% yet, but there have only been 1-2 minor accidents in about a month. What was the trigger, the key.....no idea! Time, I guess. And if you had told me that 12 months ago, I would have laughed...and possbily thrown you off a tall building.
Upon reflection, she clearly wasn't ready for doing poo in the toilet but since she was definately ready for weeing, how do you manage one and not the other? And worse still...do I want to go through it all again with Alex??? He's about the age Megan was when she first started and he is certainly interested in it all. But I think we can hold him off for a bit. Surely he can survive in nappies for a while longer..!
